The Centre for Humanities Research (CHR) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), in conjunction with Kwela Books, will be hosting an exciting conversation with acclaimed poet, Dr Mongane Wally Serote, to launch his new epic poem: Sikhahlel’ u-OR.
Dr Serote is the author of numerous award-winning poems and novels, an anti-apartheid struggle veteran, a former Member of Parliament and a Columbia University alumnus. He has many accolades to his name including the Ingrid Jonker Prize, the Noma Award, the Pablo Neruda Award and the Order of Ikhamanga. He was named Poet Laureate of South Africa in 2018.
Sikhahlel’ u-OR is a poem written in praise of the life of the late Oliver Tambo. Mandla Langa (multi-award winning writer and cultural activist), Prof. Ciraj Rassool (historian, UWC), and Luli Callinicos (historian and educationalist) will be speaking to Dr Serote about the poem in a conversation that will be moderated by Prof Monwabisi Ralarala (Dean of Arts and Humanities at UWC) and Prof Heidi Grunebaum (CHR).
